  4. Child sponsorship update from Zanibar, Tanzania
    18 May 2009

Update for child sponsors from the SOS Children's Village Zanibar, Tanzania from Summer 2008

The year 2008 began with economic inflation and devaluation of Tanzanian Shilling as usual. This year we are blessed with adequate rains, but still a further increase of food and other goods prices persist due to many factors which also cause a further rise of cost of living such as clothes and other services (e.g. transport, education, and electricity), which have been unbearable to most community members. We, as part of the community have also been affected both ways, the well-being of the staff and the budget.

Despite of these environmental factors SOS activities continue and projects are in operations. We are extremely grateful to our sponsors and donors who continue to support us in the care of vulnerable children whereby more support to the needy children is still inevitable.

Our children continued to enjoy a family based care with love, respect and security under their SOS mothers. As the year began, we had 98 SOS Children at our Village in 11 family houses under the care of 11 Mothers assisted by 4 Aunts.

In 2007 SOS Children’s Village Zanzibar established a new facility for youth boys in Fuoni area. This facility, which is known as semi-independent youth facility currently accommodates 4 youth boys and few more youths are expected to join in later.

Academic progress of the children was disturbed when the Village Educator left for further studies, the new village educator started immediately picking up with the academic supervision guided by the monitoring and tutoring program. 63% of our children scored 60% and above. The village is planning to further improve the situation.

  6. Salim urges solidarity in Zanzibar
    By Salma Said, Zanzibar

Former Organisation of African Unit (OAU) secretary-general, Dr Salim Ahmed Salim has called on political leaders to unite in promoting peace and stability in Zanzibar.

Dr Salim, who was speaking at the launch of a book entitled 'Race Revolution and the Struggle for Human Rights in Zanzibar', castigated some politicians in the Union Government who were against unity.

"In today's world unity works better. How can we confront big nations if we are not united?" he queried.

The book, authored by Prof Thomas Burgess, Ali Sultan Issa and Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad, was launched at the Al- Yamin Funguni Hall in the Isles.

One of the organisers of the event, Mr Ismail Jussa, a close aide to Maalim Seif, lashed out at Zanzibari political leaders for snubbing the event.

Dr Salim, a member of the ruling CCM, said there were political leaders in both the Mainland and Zanzibar who had pursued a dangerous course but working against the Union.

He criticised some politicians in the Isles who were using human rights as an excuse to undermine unity.

He said: "Before we start demanding human rights we must first unite and work as a group. We must be one, not Pemba or Unguja."

Dr Salim warned that entertaining ethnicity could spark chaos as was happening in some African countries, and urged politicians to put aside their differences to promote peace in the Isles.

He said though he was a CCM member, he respected and honoured the contribution made to the development of the Isles by opposition leaders like CUF secretary-general Maalim Seif Shariff Hamad.

  7. Tanzania: Dual Citizenship Will Be Welcome

Two weeks ago, Tanzania's former Minister for Home Affairs, Capt. John Chiligati, now Minister for Lands and Urban Development, said in an interview with the Voice of America that the government had reached an advanced stage in considering adoption of a dual citizenship policy.

That is welcome news for thousands of Tanzanians and non-Tanzanians alike living or wishing to live abroad, but have vested family and business interests in this country.

Chiligati said there are a few issues that are currently being finalized by Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar, citing the issue of whether a person with dual citizenship could be allowed to run for president of either the United Republic of Tanzania or Zanzibar.

Thousands of Zanzibaris fled Zanzibar during the bloody revolution in 1964 to live permanently in Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

This anticipated new development will place such people in a position to enjoy the best of both worlds. Thousands more from the mainland who left as students and never returned from Europe, the United States of America and Canada where they have amassed enough capital to return 'home' to invest it will also like the planned policy development. It also affects women who got married to non-Tanzanians but wish to regain their birth rights.

Dual citizenship is important because Tanzania's current law on citizenship forbids dual citizenship. One is either a Tanzanian or non-Tanzanian. This restriction has prevented thousands of people from returning to Tanzania to invest their wealth in their motherland. It could also mark the beginning of political participation in their home country by voting in presidential and parliamentary elections at foreign embassies.

Tanzanians living overseas have repeatedly told President Kikwete they wish to return to invest in Tanzania's economy which has a huge potential for growth in the services sector, hotels and hospitality, tourism, transport, agro-businesses, fishing and livestock sectors
